6 Caves Kentuckians Save for the Cold Months
When it’s cold and gray outside, heading underground can make for a surprisingly comfortable day out.
Kentuckians can count on caves that stay about the same temperature all year, and several keep giving tours through the colder months.
Here are the caves worth saving for winter.
1. Lost River Cave
Lost River Cave builds its main tour around a boat ride.
Its tours page lists closures only for holidays.
The tour lasts 45 minutes.
It starts with a 20-minute guided walk along the river’s edge, then a 25-minute boat ride through the cave.
Lost River’s FAQ puts the cave at 57 degrees year-round and says a light jacket may be suitable.
You can walk in, since walk-ins are welcome, though reservations are highly recommended.
If boat tours must be canceled, you can take a guided walk to the historic cave entrance instead.
2. Diamond Caverns
Diamond Caverns’ tours page says the cave stays at a constant 58 degrees.
The guided tour takes about an hour and covers a half-mile loop.
That loop has 350 stair steps, though you climb no more than 50 at a time.
The tour is strenuous but appropriate for all ages.
Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven, damp surfaces.
Tours are first come, first served, and the homepage says they cap out at 20 people, with availability not guaranteed.
For hours, the tours page lists 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central from November 1 through March 19, 2027.
The homepage lists 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central every day, so the two pages don’t match.
3. Mammoth Cave
Mammoth Cave runs cave tours every day of the year except December 25, according to the National Park Service.
Out on the surface, daytime highs seldom top 50 degrees, and nighttime lows often drop below freezing.
Inside, temperatures vary somewhat but usually hover around 54 degrees year-round, so a January tour tends to feel close to a July tour.
Winter helps with tickets, too.
Tickets are generally still available days in advance, and many tours often don’t fully sell out.
You should still book ahead, since the park strongly recommends reservations and doesn’t guarantee walk-up tickets.

4. Cascade Cave
Kentucky State Parks lists tours at Cascade Cave, in Carter Caves State Resort Park, as available all year round.
You walk about three-quarters of a mile in roughly 75 minutes, with 225 stairs on what the park calls easy terrain.
There's a 30-foot underground waterfall along the way.
Advance reservations and online ticket sales aren't available, so you buy tickets at the Welcome Center on the day of your tour.
X-Cave, another tour listed as available all year round, covers a quarter-mile in about 45 minutes, with 75 stair steps and some stooping.
5. Hidden River Cave
As of early October, Hidden River Cave, in the town of Horse Cave, is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central, according to its homepage.
Walk-ins are welcome and reservations aren't required.
Hidden River's tour page says the guided tour takes about an hour and can run 75 minutes depending on group size.
Your tour travels down about 230 stairs to a landing.
More stairs lead to the bridge and up into Sunset Dome, for 325 steps one way.
The guides take their time, so you can take breaks as needed on the way back up.
The American Cave Museum is free, with a self-guided visit that usually takes less than an hour.
6. Crystal Onyx Cave
As of early October, Crystal Onyx Cave, in Cave City, lists daily tours through January 3, 2027.
After that, the cave is listed as closed to walk-ins from January 4 through February 28, 2027, with private tours only.
A tour lasts about an hour and covers a half mile, with the cave at 58 degrees year-round.
You don't need a reservation, though private tours require advance booking.
Crystal Onyx's pricing page says there are no tours if snow or ice is on the ground, with closings posted on its Facebook page.
Cave Closing Days Around the Holidays
Diamond Caverns, Lost River Cave and Hidden River Cave list these holiday closings as of early October.
Diamond Caverns is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Lost River Cave is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
As of early October, Lost River Cave's tours page lists New Year's Eve as closed, while its FAQ says the cave closes at noon that day.
Hidden River Cave's homepage says it's closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
Above Ground at Mammoth Cave
If you're camping in the cold months, the park's winter page says Houchin Ferry Campground is the only one at Mammoth Cave National Park open during the winter months.
The Mammoth Cave and Maple Springs campgrounds are listed as closed from December 1 through February 28.
The park's lodge operates with reduced services and room capacity.
The park calls winter a great time to explore on foot.
The occasional snow and ice storm isn't unheard of.
Weather closures of the visitor center and tour cancellations are rare but do occur.
Carter Caves' Seasonal Tours
Carter Caves State Resort Park lists several of its cave tours only for the warmer months.
The Saltpetre Cave lantern tours and the Bat Cave walking tour are listed for Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Saltpetre Cave tours are listed seven days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet says Bat Cave protects the federally endangered Indiana bat, with wintering numbers estimated at 28,000.
Laurel Cave can only be visited from May 1 through Labor Day, and you need a permit from the Welcome Center.
Horn Hollow Cave is listed as open year round, though you need a self-exploration permit to go in.
Those permits are available from 9 a.m. until two hours before the Welcome Center closes.
