5 Halloween Habits That Give Away a Florida Transplant Instantly

Moving to Florida can change more about Halloween than you’d expect.

Transplants may bring routines from colder states that don’t quite fit the heat, the bugs or storm season.

Here are the habits that could give away your transplant status this year.

Note: This is general information, not legal or medical advice. Rules, guidance and event dates are subject to change.

1. Waiting Until October 31

Disney gives Halloween a nearly three-month run at Magic Kingdom, where Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes place on select nights from August 7 through October 31, 2026.

Sixteen of those nights fall in October.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay runs its Howl-O-Scream nights from September 11 through October 31.

Universal Orlando Resort’s Halloween Horror Nights starts August 28 and ends November 1.

Universal’s run starts two weeks before Busch Gardens’ and ends a day after it.

If you save all of it for one night, you’re missing much of the fun.

If you’re picking a date for your family, you have months to choose from.

2. Costumes Built for a Coat

If your Halloween costume is built around a winter coat, Miami’s record high for October 31 is 91 degrees.

That mark was reached in both 2002 and 2023.

The City of Tampa’s police department tells you to choose costumes made from light materials to avoid dehydration and other heat-related issues.

Costumes should also be light in color or have reflective tape.

If you plan the costume first and the weather second, expect to be hot.

What Florida’s Mask Law Covers

Section 876.12 of the Florida Statutes bars anyone over 16 from appearing on a street, sidewalk or other public way in a mask that hides their identity.

Section 876.16 exempts people wearing traditional holiday costumes.

Section 876.155 says the mask provisions apply only when the wearer has one of four listed intents, such as intimidating or harassing another person.

3. Decorating in Hurricane Season

Halloween falls inside hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center says runs from June 1 to November 30.

Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time on October 9, 2024, as a Category 3 hurricane.

That landfall came just over three weeks before Halloween.

If you put decorations out in September, you’ll want a plan for taking them in when a storm shows up on the forecast.

In a hurricane watch area, the National Weather Service office in Mobile, Alabama, says to prepare to bring inside lawn furniture and other loose, light-weight objects.

Its examples include garbage cans and garden tools.

Question 1 of 8

How long can a Seminole pumpkin be stored in a cool, dry place, according to the University of Florida’s extension service?

4. Skipping the Bug Spray

Eleven days before Halloween in 2025, the Florida Department of Health in Duval County advised residents of an increase in mosquito-borne disease activity in areas of the county.

The department's guidance, published October 8, 2024, says to wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves and to apply mosquito repellent to bare skin and clothing.

Always follow the label when you use repellents.

A short-sleeved costume with open sandals leaves you on the wrong side of that advice.

5. Adult Costumes at Disney World

A July 2024 answer on Disney's guest Q&A page says the resort prohibits adults from wearing costumes or masks in its theme parks, other than during Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

Guests are pointed to the party's official costume guidelines before they plan a costume.

A Disney fan site's 2026 guide to the party lays out the rules by age, starting with a ban on costume masks of any kind if you're 14 or older.

If your kids are 13 and under, they can wear costumes and some costume masks, as long as the mask leaves their eyes fully visible.

Guests 14 and older can wear themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats.

They can dress as a favorite character, but they can't pose for pictures or sign autographs for other guests.

Alligators at Dusk

If your route runs along a lake, canal or pond, stay on the sidewalk side.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) says alligators are most active between dusk and dawn, which covers Halloween evening.

Keep pets on a leash and away from the water's edge, since pets often resemble alligators' natural prey.

Never feed an alligator because it's illegal and dangerous, and keep a safe distance if you see one.

Swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours.

There's also a toll-free hotline for reporting problem alligators.

Pumpkin Planting Dates

The University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences says pumpkins do best when planted in late March and early April.

They mature in about 100 days, depending on the variety.

If you're growing pumpkins to carve for Halloween, plant them by early July.

Plantings from late April through July, a stretch that includes that early-July deadline, produce smaller pumpkins and are affected by virus, fungal disease and fruit-set problems, the university says.

Seminole pumpkins can be harvested in 120 to 150 days, a longer wait than the general figure of about 100 days.
