6 Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Rules That Cost Iowans at the Pump

You pull up to the pump with a Hy-Vee Fuel Saver discount and a nearly empty tank, ready to save big.

But a few rules decide how much you really save.

Here’s what to know before your next fill-up, plus a way to stack your savings with Shell.

1. Expiration After 30 Days

Each Fuel Saver discount you earn expires 30 days after you buy the eligible item that earned it.

The catch?

Each eligible item carries a separate 30 days, so the discounts on your card can run out on different dates.

If you shop for groceries more often than you fill up, your oldest discounts can run out before you reach a pump.

Hy-Vee’s Learn More page gives an example.

A discount earned on September 3 expires October 3 at 11:59:59 p.m. local time.

2. Participating Gas Stations Only

Your Fuel Saver discount works at only some gas stations.

That list is short.

The Perks terms name Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh, Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh Express and Hy-Vee Gas locations, plus participating Casey’s, Shell or Sinclair gas stations.

The word “participating” matters.

Among outside brands, only participating Casey’s, Shell and Sinclair gas stations count, so a brand you recognize doesn’t settle it for you.

The discount applies only to gasoline or diesel purchases.

3. Designated Products Only

You earn Fuel Saver discounts by buying designated products, not by filling a cart.

Not every item qualifies.

Hy-Vee’s Learn More page says those items are marked as Fuel Saver items in the weekly print ad.

The Perks terms say rewards aren’t eligible to be earned on restricted products, including alcohol, tobacco and fuel.

You must also use your Perks card at checkout to receive rewards.

If you still carry a red Fuel Saver card, the email you enter on Hy-Vee’s activate page must match the one tied to it.

Gas Pump Know-How

Answer these questions on gas pumps and fuel savings. We bet you can’t get them all right. Prove us wrong?

Question 1 of 10

Iowa taxes regular gasoline at how much per gallon as of July 1, 2026?

4. A Price Floor on Every Gallon

The Perks terms set a minimum price of $0.019 to $0.109 a gallon, depending on the type of fuel dispenser, and a Fuel Saver discount can't take the price you pay below it.

Big discounts hit a limit.

In other words, the lowest price a discount can bring you to is somewhere between 1.9 cents and 10.9 cents a gallon.

When an earned discount is more than the pump price minus that amount, the rest rolls over to a later redemption.

You have to use it before its 30 days run out.

The Math Behind Fuel Saver's Price Floor

The most a discount can take off a gallon is the pump price minus the floor.

Say gas is $3.00 a gallon and the floor at your dispenser is $0.109.

That's $3.00 minus $0.109, or $2.891 a gallon.

A 30-cent discount comes off in full, since the floor only matters once discounts pass $2.891 a gallon.

5. The 20-Gallon Cap

Under the Perks terms, one redemption transaction covers no more than 20 gallons of discounted fuel.

Twenty gallons is the limit.

Say your discount is 30 cents a gallon. The most one redemption can save you is $6.

On a 25-gallon fill-up, the last five gallons wouldn't carry the discount.

Each redemption is limited to one vehicle, too, so your second vehicle needs a separate redemption transaction.

6. No Cash, No Transfers

Under the Perks terms, Fuel Saver rewards can't be redeemed for cash, and they can't be transferred from one Perks card to another.

Cash is off the table.

If you and someone in your household each carry a card, each of you can use only the discounts earned on your own card.

Hy-Vee isn't responsible for lost or stolen Perks cards.

Reports go to customercare@hy-vee.com or 800-232-2580.

Shell Fuel Rewards

Hy-Vee's Learn More page says you can link Shell's Fuel Rewards program to your Fuel Saver card.

Those savings can be combined with Fuel Saver discounts.

The limit?

You can redeem those rewards only at Shell gas stations.

Changes Without Notice

Under the Perks terms, Hy-Vee can modify or end the program behind Fuel Saver, or any program reward, at any time and without notice.

That's broad.

Hy-Vee has the same room to refuse service to you or cancel your membership.

What Wisconsin Gets

A Wisconsin supplement to the Perks terms lets members convert Fuel Saver discounts into store credit.

It took effect October 20, 2025.

Wisconsin works differently.

It applies only to members whose hy-vee.com account lists a Wisconsin store as their My Hy-Vee location, so you're covered only if yours does.

Those members must convert all of their available fuel discounts at once, at $0.10 of store credit for every $0.01 of discount.

No partial conversions are permitted, and the credit expires on the original 30-day schedule.

Converted credit can be redeemed only at participating Wisconsin Hy-Vee locations.
