5 Big Differences Between Publix and Food Lion Every North Carolinian Should Know
Publix and Food Lion play by different rules, and North Carolinians who shop both can miss out on savings.
Here’s where the two stores differ, and what some of them mean for you at the register.
1. Starting Points
Food Lion’s first store opened in west Salisbury in December 1957, when the company was called Food Town, according to the Salisbury Post.
The company changed its name to Food Lion in 1983 to expand into states where Food Town already existed.
If you live near Charlotte, a Food Lion release dated Oct. 5, 2026 announced a new store opening on Oct. 7.
Publix came to North Carolina much later.
Supermarket News reported in March 2014 that Publix had opened its first North Carolina store, in Ballantyne, as part of an expansion into the Charlotte market.
As of October 2026, Publix’s Facts & Figures page lists 63 stores in North Carolina.
2. Coupon Stacking
Publix lets you use a manufacturer coupon with either a Publix coupon or a competitor coupon on the same item.
Two coupons per item is the most Publix’s coupon policy page allows.
Food Lion lets you use only one coupon per item.
So a manufacturer coupon plus a Publix coupon on the same box of crackers works at Publix but not at Food Lion.
Competitor Coupons at Publix and Food Lion
Publix posts a list of competitors whose coupons it accepts in each of its stores.
You can ask Customer Service at your local Publix for that list.
Food Lion honors printed competitor coupons from grocery stores within 10 miles of the store, according to its coupon policy.
Food Lion’s store management decides which grocery stores count as competitors.
Food Lion doesn’t accept competitor coupons from wholesale clubs, drugstores or dollar stores, such as Costco and Walgreens.
Food Lion also rejects digital and mobile phone coupons from competitors.
3. Loyalty Programs
Food Lion’s rewards run on a monthly cycle through Shop & Earn, part of its MVP loyalty program.
You activate your personalized offers at the start of each month.
After that, your purchases of qualifying items count toward your monthly rewards.
Food Lion then redeems your rewards automatically on your next shopping trip with your loyalty card, unless you donate them to charity.
The rewards you earn in a month stay available through the following month.
A Feb. 1, 2018 Food Lion release says Shop & Earn rolled out across 10 states after pilots in the Raleigh and Greensboro markets the year before.
Publix’s FAQ calls Club Publix a free loyalty program and says members can clip digital coupons and see BOGOs and deals picked for them.
When you enter your phone number at checkout every time you shop, future savings are more personalized based on what you buy.

4. Money-Back Guarantees
Food Lion will double your money back on private brand and in-store produced items that don't meet your quality expectations, according to its return policy page.
Food Lion's 100% Fresh promise offers the same double on all fresh items in produce, meat, deli, bakery and dairy.
For any other product that doesn't meet your expectation, you get an exchange or a refund.
Publix's Guarantee page promises the full purchase price back on request if a purchase doesn't give you complete satisfaction for any reason.
The difference is the double: Food Lion doubles your money back on those items, while Publix refunds the full price.
Publix reserves the right to limit refunds over misuse or where the law prohibits them, according to its refund policy.
Food Lion's management reserves the right to limit refunds or double money back guarantees, too.
5. Coupons on Online Orders
Publix's Instacart FAQ says printed and digital coupons you have clipped to your Club Publix account aren't redeemable through Instacart.
Most BOGOs, as well as Club Publix perks, are redeemable through Instacart.
But not all Publix deals or weekly ad promotions apply.
Food Lion's digital coupon FAQ says it deducts any relevant coupon savings whether you shop in store or online, once you meet the offer's purchase requirement.
Where the Coupon Rules Match
Publix digital coupons are available to anyone with a Club Publix account.
Food Lion digital coupons require a Food Lion account.
Publix doesn't accept coupons presented on a mobile phone or device.
Food Lion doesn't accept coupons displayed on a phone or tablet, either.
Publix bars you from combining a manufacturer digital offer with a manufacturer paper coupon on the same item.
Food Lion likewise bars you from combining a digital coupon offer with a paper coupon on the same items.
Publix accepts a coupon for a competitor's private label product.
Food Lion accepts a competitor's coupon for a private brand item on a matching Food Lion private brand item.
When the Register Overcharges You
The Publix Promise says that if an item's scanned price exceeds the shelf or advertised price at checkout, you get one of that item free.
Publix charges the lower price for the remaining items and excludes alcohol and tobacco.
Food Lion's Scan Guarantee gives you one of each unique item free if the checkout price is higher than the shelf tag or sign.
Food Lion charges the shelf tag price for any additional units of the same item.
Food Lion can't give you a free item on alcohol and tobacco in all states, or on milk in Pennsylvania and Virginia. You still pay the shelf tag price.
If you return to the store after your purchase, Food Lion requires your receipt so you receive proper credit.
