3 Big Differences Between Food Lion and Harris Teeter Every Virginian Should Know
Thanksgiving is Nov. 26, so your grocery cart is probably about to get a lot fuller.
Food Lion and Harris Teeter both want your holiday business, but they pay you back in different ways.
Here are the big differences between Food Lion and Harris Teeter every Virginian should know.
1. Store Footprints
Food Lion has more than 1,100 stores across 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states.
Harris Teeter has about 250 stores, Grocery Dive reported in September 2026.
Virginia is one of seven states on its map, along with North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Maryland and Delaware, plus Washington, D.C.
Do the math, and Food Lion has more than four times as many stores.
In greater Richmond, Food Lion said in October 2017 that it had 71 stores.
The company said it had been a neighbor in the area since 1982.
The company put $110 million into those stores that year.
It also hired more than 1,000 associates in the region as part of the overhaul.
That overhaul also brought lower prices on thousands of items, the release said.
That size gap may decide which of the two sits closest to your house.
2. Parent Companies
Food Lion calls itself a company of Ahold Delhaize USA.
Harris Teeter answers to Kroger instead.
Kroger completed its merger with Harris Teeter on January 28, 2014.
The deal added 227 Harris Teeter stores to Kroger in southeastern and mid-Atlantic markets and Washington, D.C.
Kroger kept the Harris Teeter name on the stores.
If you shop at both, your wallet holds rewards cards from two chains with different parent companies, the MVP card for Food Lion and the VIC card for Harris Teeter.

3. Rewards Programs
Food Lion's MVP rewards card comes with Shop & Earn, a program the company launched in 2018 as an enhancement to its MVP rewards.
At launch, Food Lion said new offers would arrive on the first of each month.
Activate the personalized offers you want.
Rewards you earn are applied automatically to your next trip.
The launch release gave you until the last day of the month to earn rewards and until the end of the following month to redeem them.
That release also described Food Lion's Hot Sale specials as available only with an MVP card.
Harris Teeter's VIC rewards card sends its savings to the gas pump instead.
VIC members earn 1 Fuel Point for every $1 spent.
You can use points at Harris Teeter Fuel Centers and participating BP and Amoco stations.
So Food Lion's rewards come off your next grocery bill, while Harris Teeter's come off the price of gas.
The Math Behind Harris Teeter's Fuel Points
Every 100 Fuel Points at Harris Teeter take 10 cents off a gallon of gas.
Spend $300 on groceries to earn 300 points, worth 30 cents off each gallon.
One fill-up can use up to 1,000 points, which is $1 off per gallon on a maximum of 35 gallons.
That tops out at $35 off.
Fuel Point Fine Print
Gift card purchases earn double points, except Harris Teeter gift cards and prepaid Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards.
You can earn as many points as you like each month, since there's no monthly cap.
Points you earn this month expire at the end of next month.
A balance under 100 points at the end of the month expires too.
Harris Teeter's Store-Brand Guarantees
Harris Teeter backs its store brands with a refund policy called the yourplus guarantee.
With proof of purchase and a valid VIC rewards card, you get your money back and a free like item of your choice.
The yourplus guarantee covers brands that include Harris Teeter, H.T. Traders and Harris Teeter Naturals.
Refunds are available on products bought within the last 60 days.
Lost the receipt? A verified VIC card can prove the purchase.
The name on the card has to match your ID.
The card must also have been in the system for more than 30 days.
Premium lines such as Rancher beef and Fresh Foods Market items carry a separate yourdouble guarantee that requires a receipt.
In a 2016 ad campaign, Food Lion promoted a double-your-money-back guarantee on fresh produce, meats, deli and bakery items and private brand items.
Harris Teeter's Coupon Policy
Harris Teeter's posted coupon policy says the store doubles manufacturer coupons up to 99 cents.
The doubled total can't top $1.98 or the item's full price, whichever is less.
That means a 50-cent manufacturer coupon comes off as $1.
With a VIC rewards card, you can double 20 coupons a day.
Digital coupons don't double.
Doubling stops at three identical items, so extra coupons for the same item come off at face value.
Coupons that say they can't be doubled won't be.
If an item runs out during a coupon promotion, you can ask for a rain check at the sale price.
Rain checks expire 60 days after the date of issue.
If an item scans higher than the shelf tag, Harris Teeter's scan guarantee gives you one free and any extras at the shelf price.
The same policy caps those guarantees at five per customer.
Past five, you get the gap between the shelf tag and the scanned price refunded instead.
In Harris Teeter's example, a receipt shows six products that all scanned at the wrong price, including tuna, tomato sauce, cereal, shampoo, crackers and diapers.
The first five products get one free item each, while the extras and the diapers only get the price difference refunded.
