Publix Made the List of America’s Favorite Grocery Stores. But Did It Beat ALDI, Florida’s Other Beloved Chain?

Grocery loyalty in Florida is serious business, especially when it comes to Publix and ALDI.

Both stores earned a spot on the list of America’s 15 favorite grocery chains, proving just how much shoppers love them. (Sorry, Winn-Dixie fans, your grocery store didn’t make the cut.)

But here’s the kicker: Neither Publix nor ALDI took the top spot. Can you guess which one placed higher than the other?

Methodology

The team at InsiderMonkey analyzed articles from Yahoo Finance, Business Insider, Eat This, Epicurious, and Zippia to determine the top 15 grocery stores in the United States.

Their scoring metrics provided points each time a grocery store appeared in one of their sources. 

These were the results.

1: Trader Joe’s

In 1967, Joe Coulombe launched a distinctive grocery chain in the bright, sunny city of Pasadena, California.

With a focus on private-label products (including their much-beloved cookie butter), competitive pricing, and personalized customer service, Trader Joe’s is a favorite for many Americans. 

2: Wegmans

Wegmans is one of the largest private companies in the U.S. and stands out for its organic product offerings, which include over 4,000 items.

Their top-notch produce selection and unique offerings contribute to an outstanding customer experience. 

3: Publix

Publix is the largest employee-owned grocery chain in the U.S., and its sales reached $54.4 billion in 2022.

You can find Publix stores in southeastern U.S. states, like Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.  

4: HEB

HEB started in Texas but now has 420 locations in the U.S. and Mexico.

Though its footprint is still relatively small compared to other stores on this list, HEB is beloved for its well-stocked produce and meat departments, as well as its commitment to customer trust. 

5: ALDI 

ALDI is all about affordability. This no-frills grocery store offers products at incredibly affordable prices.

Born in Germany, ALDI now has 2,200 stores in 36 states. 

6: Meijer

Meijer is a popular midwest hypermarket. It’s well-stocked with typical grocery products as well as electronics, home goods, and beauty products.

The 246-store chain emphasizes inclusivity, quality, affordability, and innovation.  

7: Costco

Bulk grocery shoppers can find some of the best deals at Costco Wholesale stores.

Offering impressive affordability and fantastic customer service, this membership-based store reported an impressive revenue of $222.7 billion in 2022.  

8: The Kroger Co. 

The Kroger Co. owns several grocery store brands you might recognize, including QFC, Ralph’s, and Fred Meyer.

All of their chains focus on affordable pricing, high-quality offerings, and a wide product selection. 

9: Walmart

Walmart entered the grocery game with its first supercenter in 1988. Today, it is America’s largest grocer, controlling an estimated 20% of the market.

Walmart is also one of America’s top employers, giving jobs to 1.5 million Americans. Its convenient online portal and low prices make it a customer favorite. 

10: Sam’s Club

As every Sam’s Club member knows, bulk shopping can lead to long-term savings. This warehouse-style store offers an extensive selection of beverages, candy, deli items, and frozen food.

Members also love its healthy Member’s Marked prepared meals. 

11: Whole Foods

Though it’s not the most budget-friendly grocery store, Whole Foods’ commitment to quality is unmatched.

The purpose-driven chain believes in providing sustainable and organic products that nourish customers and better the environment. 

12: Target

American consumers flock to Target for groceries thanks to convenient features like same-day pickup and online shopping.

Target even recently announced it’s trying to attract more grocery shoppers with higher quality standards and unique food and beverage offerings. 

13: Market Basket

According to InsiderMonkey’s report, Market Basket holds over 20% of the market share in the greater Boston area.

It offers competitive pricing and a customer-forward approach that drives consumer loyalty. 

14: Dollar General

Dollar General may have a limited grocery selection, but its prices are extremely competitive.

It has 19,000 stores across the country, 2,700 of which are “DG Markets” that focus solely on fresh grocery products. 

15: CVS

CVS is well-known as a pharmacy, but the chain of 9,600 stores also carries a substantial amount of grocery items.

Shoppers appreciate the convenience of picking up grocery staples at their local pharmacy, and CVS coupons can make their prices competitive with other major supermarkets. 

An Evolving Landscape

The InsiderMonkey report points out that grocery shopping in America is evolving.

E-commerce, technological innovations, and the rise in grocery delivery are changing the way Americans get their food. 

Online Grocery Shopping

A 2022 USDA study showed that 20% of shoppers reported buying their groceries online at least once in the last month.

On top of that, Statista data reveals that grocery delivery has been on the rise since 2017 and is projected to continue growing through 2029. 

Not For Everyone

Interestingly, Trader Joe’s tops the InsiderMonkey list for best grocery store in the U.S.

Unlike other grocery chains, Trader Joe’s does not offer online shopping or grocery delivery, showing that e-commerce for groceries may not be all it’s cracked up to be. 

The Grocery Delivery Debate

In the USDA report, survey respondents who used grocery delivery said they did so for convenience.

Those who did not use grocery delivery stated that they wanted to see and touch their grocery items in person before purchasing. 

Grocery Store Innovation

Online delivery isn’t the only innovation hitting American grocery stores.

Amazon, which acquired Whole Foods in 2017, is opening entire stores based on the latest technology. 

No Check Out

Amazon Go stores allow shoppers to skip checkout altogether.

Customers scan a payment method to enter the store, and items are charged automatically when they walk out. 

Smart Carts

Amazon is also responsible for the Dash Cart, a smart grocery cart that allows consumers to scan items as they add them to their cart.

Shoppers can easily keep track of their spending and skip check-out, as items automatically charge when they walk out of the store.
