Virginians Who Pick Wegmans Can Save About 10% on Groceries, Study Shows
Groceries are expensive enough without wondering if you’re paying more than you need to.
A price check of stores around D.C. compared Wegmans with the area’s other big chains.
Here’s what it found, and what it could mean for Virginians who shop near the city.
Note: This is general information, not financial advice. Prices and survey results are subject to change.
How the Prices Were Compared
Washington Consumers’ Checkbook rates grocery stores and delivery services near D.C. Its site says it’s a nonprofit that takes no ad or referral fees.
To compare prices, its team shopped area stores with a list of 150 common items.
For Wegmans, the baseline is the average of Giant, Harris Teeter and Safeway.
It is not any one of them.
The Three-Chain Average
Against that baseline, Wegmans’ prices ran about 10% lower.
So a cart that costs $100 at the three-chain average would cost about $90 at Wegmans.
Against Whole Foods, Wegmans ran about 15% lower.
Harris Teeter is one of the three chains in that average. So the figure isn’t a number for Harris Teeter alone.
Checkbook’s Kevin Brasler told the D.C. TV station WJLA in February 2026 that Wegmans was the biggest winner on quality and price.
Checkbook looks at stores across the D.C. area.
So this describes Northern Virginia and the D.C. area, not all of Virginia.
What the 10 Percent Covers
The 10% is an average across Checkbook’s 150-item list. Items in your own cart can cost more or less.
Take a family that spends $300 a week at the supermarket.
Say that whole $300 moved to Wegmans, and the gap held across the cart. A 10% difference would add up to $1,560 a year.
The same math at a 15% difference totals $2,340 a year.
Harris Teeter Prices
Checkbook found Harris Teeter’s prices about the same as Giant’s and Safeway’s.
It gives no Harris Teeter-versus-Wegmans number of its own. So the three-chain average is the figure to go by.
Set that average at 100, and Wegmans lands near 90.

Whole Foods once earned a superior overall-quality rating from more than 90 percent of Checkbook’s surveyed customers. What share gives it that rating now?
Quality Scores
Those savings are measured against Giant, Harris Teeter, Safeway and Whole Foods. Don't expect them against every store in the region.
Checkbook warns that Wegmans' prices aren't among the lowest in the region.
They're competitive, though.
Now for quality.
In the survey, 87% of Wegmans' customers judged it superior overall.
That's nearly nine in ten.
Also, 85% rated its produce superior.
At Harris Teeter, 60% of surveyed customers judged it superior overall.
That trails Wegmans.
But Harris Teeter does beat Giant and Safeway.
Its scores for produce, meats and helpful staff were much higher than theirs.
Yet its prices were about the same.
Wegmans Online Prices
Wegmans says its online prices remain about 15% above in-store prices. That covers the cost of shopping your order.
Delivery costs $4.99 through December 31, 2026, while pickup carries no delivery fee, service charge or tip.
Taxes and tip are still extra.
Because online prices aren't shelf prices, compare the app with the shelf tag before you count on the gap.
Loyalty Card Discounts
Harris Teeter's Club 60 program takes 5% off for shoppers 60 and older every Thursday with their loyalty card.
On a $100 cart, that's $5 off.
The discount applies after coupons and other loyalty-card discounts come off. It leaves out fuel, pharmacy, tickets and gift cards.
That same card earns fuel points that can add up to $1 a gallon in savings at the pump.
It also sends weekly emails with members-only savings.
Wegmans' Shoppers Club is free.
It gives you digital coupons to clip on wegmans.com or the Wegmans app.
When a Shoppers Club discount covers the same item, you can redeem both.
Overcharge Guarantees
Both chains promise to fix a wrong price, but they pay it out differently.
If an item rings up too high, Wegmans' price-accuracy pledge refunds the difference.
That holds outside Massachusetts and the Greater Buffalo area. Wegmans adds $1 as a thank-you for pointing the error out.
Harris Teeter's scan guarantee gives you the item free when it scans above the shelf tag.
Any extra quantities come at the tag price.
Alcohol and tobacco don't count.
The policy caps scan guarantees at five per customer and lists no time period for that limit.
Other pricing errors get the difference refunded.
Whichever store you use, check your receipt before you leave.
What the Survey Covers
Wegmans' store list shows 15 Virginia stores. Some are in Northern Virginia, such as Alexandria, Fairfax, Reston and Tysons.
Checkbook describes Wegmans' East Coast growth as slow but steady.
Its first D.C.-area store opened in 2004, and it had more than a dozen stores in the region as of November 2025.
The same store list also shows Wegmans in Charlottesville, Midlothian, Short Pump and Virginia Beach.
Checkbook's article doesn't report prices for those four places. So don't assume its findings apply if you shop there.
Kroger owns Harris Teeter. It has about 250 stores in seven states and Washington, D.C. Virginia is one of them.
