Nineteen Wegmans stores now serve Pennsylvania.

Unbeknownst to many shoppers, they make their lives harder by not understanding how Wegmans’ deli and bakery counters operate.

These are the deli and bakery mistakes many Pennsylvania shoppers keep making at Wegmans.

1. Trying to Order a Sub Through Delivery

Wegmans keeps the Sub Shop off its regular delivery and pickup app.

A shopper who plans lunch around a made-to-order sandwich finds no listing to add to the cart.

Its ordering FAQ lists Market Café subs, pizza, and hot and cold food bars as unavailable through that everyday delivery and pickup channel.

A shopper who timed a delivery lunch around that sandwich ends up empty-handed exactly when the order should have arrived.

Meals 2GO is the separate app that reaches the Sub Shop, and it delivers to many locations instead of forcing a store trip.

2. Waiting Until the Last Minute for a Cake

Wegmans’ custom cakes need lead time to come together, and shoppers who wait until the week of a party often find that window already closed.

The rule is a minimum of 24 hours’ notice for cakes and most catering, with orders open as far out as 40 days.

There’s not much wiggle room.

That’s a problem for a Saturday birthday remembered on a Thursday night.

Order early instead, and Wegmans has time to build the cake right instead of rushing it.

3. Trying to Edit a Cake Order Online

Wegmans locks a cake order the moment it’s placed, and shoppers who spot a typo in the message or the wrong size can’t just fix it themselves.

Wegmans’ own ordering system won’t let a cake order change online or in the app once it’s submitted.

Not even the spelling changes.

Call the pickup store directly instead, before the bakery starts decorating, and a person there can usually fix it.

A five-minute call beats a cake that shows up wrong on the day it matters most.

4. Assuming a Platter Arrives Hot

Wegmans builds deli party platters through the same Meals 2GO ordering system as its cakes, and shoppers who grab a platter for a gathering can be caught off guard once they get home.

Wegmans classifies a deli platter as a catering item, and its FAQ says catering entrees and side dishes, platters included, arrive cold at pickup and need reheating before they hit the table.

Hungry guests do the math.

Check the label at pickup and budget the oven time, and the platter serves the way it’s supposed to.

5. Trusting the Gluten-Free Label at the Bakery Case

At Wegmans’ bakery case, some items are marked as made with no gluten-containing ingredients, and shoppers managing celiac disease can read that as a flat guarantee.

It isn’t a guarantee.

The label means the recipe skips any ingredient derived from wheat, rye, or barley, and nothing more.

Wegmans’ gluten-free FAQ says those same items can still pick up gluten from shared ovens, cutting boards, utensils, grills, and fryers.

Ask the bakery staff directly before trusting the case with a severe allergy, and Wegmans’ team can tell you which items share equipment with wheat-based dough.

6. Swiping EBT for a Hot Deli Chicken

A hot rotisserie chicken turns at Wegmans’ deli case through the afternoon, and shoppers paying with Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) sometimes learn the hard way that it won’t ring up.

Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) rules bar any food that’s hot at the point of sale, and that includes fried chicken, hot wings, and anything warm under the heat lamp.

The hot chicken doesn’t count.

Cold cuts and cheese from the same case usually qualify, and so does a loaf of bread from the bakery.

Grab the chicken cold from the regular case instead, and EBT covers it like any other grocery item.

7. Expecting to Pay at Pickup for a Cake

Wegmans collects payment for a Meals 2GO cake or catering order well before a shopper ever walks in to grab it.

Full payment is due in advance, by credit card, a Wegmans for Business charge card, or a Wegmans gift card, not cash at the counter.

Show up planning to pay on pickup, and the transaction already happened online, days or weeks earlier.

There’s nothing to hand over.

The Sub Shop Menu's Seasonal Turnover

Wegmans' Meals 2GO menu changes with the seasons, so a favorite sub or side from the deli case doesn't always sit in the same spot year-round.

It's gone by fall.

Wegmans explains the swap on its Meals 2GO FAQ: It changes the menu seasonally to reflect what's freshest, which is why last summer's sub sometimes just disappears.

Nutrition and allergen details for Meals 2GO items aren't printed at the counter, either.

Wegmans hands that information out over the phone through its Customer Care Center instead, so a shopper managing an allergy has to call ahead rather than read a label on the spot.
