6 REAL ID Documents Californians Need in 2026 That Get People Turned Away
Waiting in a long line only to be sent home for the wrong paper is nobody’s idea of a good day.
Californians applying for a REAL ID may find the document rules pickier than they expected.
Here’s what to bring so your trip isn’t in vain.
Note: This is general information, not legal advice. Licensing rules and document requirements are subject to change, so confirm the current requirements with the California Department of Motor Vehicles (dmv.ca.gov).
1. Proof of Identity
The DMV’s form says your identity document has to be an original or a certified copy only.
A valid passport or a birth certificate are examples.
Abbreviated or abstract certificates aren’t accepted.
A Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship is on the checklist too.
So is a foreign passport with a valid U.S. visa and an approved I-94.
2. Social Security Number Proof
Your REAL ID application also needs proof of your Social Security number, though the DMV says exceptions may apply.
The full number is required, and photocopies aren’t accepted.
If you’d rather leave the card at home, you can bring a W-2, an SSA-1099 form, a non-SSA-1099 form or a paystub.
3. Two Proofs of California Residency
The DMV’s checklist asks for two different printed documents that show your mailing address.
A rental or lease agreement signed by the landlord and the tenant and a voter registration confirmation from the California Secretary of State are both on the list.
Since the two documents have to be different, a second copy of the same bill doesn’t add a second proof.
Copies of residency papers are accepted, as long as they’re printed.
If you moved to California recently, you may be updating your car registration on the same trip.

Answer these questions on Social Security cards, passports and driver’s licenses. We bet you can’t get them all right. Prove us wrong?
In 1938, a wallet maker slipped a sample Social Security card into its wallets. How many people ended up reporting that printed number as their Social Security number?
4. P.O. Box Residency Documents
If you use a P.O. Box for mailing, one of your two residency documents has to show both the box and your physical address, and the other may show only the box.
A paper that lists only your box can fill the second slot, but not the first.
Your REAL ID Application Address
Your REAL ID residency documents have to show the same mailing address that's listed on your REAL ID application.
So check the address you typed into your application before you gather your residency papers.
5. Tracing Documents
If your name isn't on any of your residency documents, the DMV says you can present a tracing document.
That can be a birth certificate, a marriage license or a domestic partner registration certificate that traces your relationship.
A minor under 18 may use a residency document in a parent's name by presenting a tracing document.
6. Name-Change Documents
If your name has changed, the DMV says to bring at least one document for each legal name change.
A court-certified name change document counts too.
Each legal name change needs one, so a name that changed twice means bringing a document for both changes.
How to Spot a REAL ID Card
California REAL ID cards are marked with a golden bear and a star, so a glance at your wallet answers the question.
A standard license carries the words "Federal Limits Apply" instead.
A card with that phrase cannot be used for domestic air travel after May 7, 2025.
Does California Require a REAL ID in 2026?
Federal enforcement of REAL ID began on May 7, 2025.
Federal rules now require a REAL ID or another federally accepted ID to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal facility.
The DMV's May 1, 2025 count put REAL ID at about 58% of all license and ID cardholders.
That left roughly four in ten cardholders without a REAL ID as of that date.
When enforcement began, people who already had a federally approved document, such as a valid U.S. passport, could wait to upgrade until their ID or driver's license came due for renewal.
If you're renewing, our guide to DMV rules for drivers covers more.
Since Feb. 1, 2026, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) sends travelers without a REAL ID or another acceptable ID to a verification process called TSA ConfirmID.
That process costs $45 and is valid for 10 days, Axios reports.
A U.S. passport or passport card lets you skip the fee.
