9 Wegmans Foods New York Shoppers Grab Instead of Cooking

Wegmans put $36 million into a research kitchen in Rochester, and none of it teaches shoppers to cook.

It funds the heat-and-eat meals filling the store’s prepared foods case instead.

These are the Wegmans prepared foods New York shoppers grab instead of cooking because they’re just oh-so good.

1. Sushi

Hand-rolled sushi needs someone trained to roll it, and Wegmans keeps that person on staff at its Sushi Bar.

Wegmans treats the rice with its own care: Koshihikari rice, a house vinegar blend, and first-harvest nori wrapped around every roll.

Genuine wasabi root shows up too, not the dyed horseradish paste most sushi counters use.

That’s a big difference.

Wegmans even spun the concept into its own restaurant, Next Door by Wegmans, serving hand-crafted sushi and Japanese dishes with a full bar.

Only two locations exist, and both sit in New York.

A Rochester spot sits beside the flagship store, and a second location sits at Astor Place in Manhattan.

You won’t find a third location anywhere else in the country.

2. Asian Hot Bar

Fox News ranked Wegmans third-best in the country for its grocery store hot bar this year, behind only Whole Foods Market and The Fresh Market.

Lo mein, Thai red curry chicken, and wings in a range of flavors fill the steam trays at many locations, including the dedicated Asian hot and salad bars built into the Manhattan store.

Wings without the wait.

Fill a container and pay by the pound at the register, the same self-serve setup Wegmans keeps expanding to more locations.

Vegetarian and gluten-free options sit right alongside the wings, so the hot bar covers more than one kind of appetite.

3. Subs

Order a sandwich at Wegmans’ Sub Shop, and someone builds it while you watch, not the night before.

A Cheesesteak Sub, a Chicken Parmesan Sub, or the Italian Classic piled with deli meats and provolone beats anything pulled from a plastic clamshell.

Shoppers single out the Spicy Turkey Avocado Sandwich more than anything else on the board.

Oven-roasted turkey, guacamole, and spicy mayonnaise stack on six-seed bread, and it holds a 4.4-star customer rating with dozens of reviews behind it.

One shopper called it the best pre-made sandwich they’d ever bought from a store.

Order it through the Wegmans app before you shop, and it’s ready at the counter when you circle back.

4. Rotisserie Chicken

How long does roasting a chicken from scratch take, start to finish?

At Wegmans, that clock never starts because rotisserie chickens keep turning from the morning rush through dinner.

The same customer roundup that rated the Sub Shop’s sandwiches gives the Rosemary Roasted Chicken a 4.2-star rating, and reviewers keep repeating one detail: It never dries out.

That’s rare for chicken sitting under heat lamps for hours.

A whole rotisserie chicken feeds a family without anyone touching a roasting pan.

Dinner’s already done.

Swap in the Peruvian-Style Chicken instead, plated with Tuscan roasted potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, and a cilantro-lime green sauce, for the nights a plain rotisserie chicken won’t cut it.

5. Gold Pan Meals

An oven-safe dish with a gold interior is easy to spot from across the prepared foods case.

Wegmans calls it a Gold Pan meal, and every recipe starts a few miles away, at the Culinary Innovation Center it built onto its Rochester distribution hub.

Five 200-gallon kettles inside that kitchen turn out the soups, sauces, and fillings that end up in every Gold Pan dish.

The oven does the work.

Popular picks include Lobster Mac and Cheese, Garlic Parmesan Chicken, and crab cakes that carry a 4.7-star rating on Wegmans’ own site.

Slide the dish into the oven.

Dinner needs about twenty minutes, not a trip to the store for five separate ingredients.

Question 1 of 9

Which New York City borough got one of the country’s first supermarkets when King Kullen opened its doors in 1930?

6. Poke Bowl

Poke sits right alongside made-to-order pizza and fresh sushi at the Astor Place store in Manhattan, one floor stacked with grab-and-go meals.

Wegmans put Executive Chef David Lopatynski in charge of that lineup.

The King Salmon Poke Salad Bowl comes pre-portioned with rice, greens, and toppings already in place, so lunch is scoop-and-go instead of a cutting board full of prep.

Scoop, don't chop.

Shoppers who have never touched raw fish at home can still order a bowl that tastes like it came from a dedicated poke counter.

7. Pizza

Pick a crust, choose toppings, and watch it slide into a working oven at Wegmans' Pizza Shop counter, not a freezer aisle.

The Astor Place store built a full create-your-own pizza station into its ground floor when it opened in Manhattan in 2023, one of several made-to-order counters lining that level.

You watch it happen.

Order a whole pie or a couple of slices, and it comes out of an oven at the store, not a box thawed at home.

A counter pizza beats standing over a hot oven at home on a weeknight.

8. Soup

Six soups at a time rotate through Wegmans' Soup Station, changing with the season.

A New England Clam Chowder and a Buffalo Chicken Chowder spicy enough to need a pretzel roll chaser show up in the rotation, alongside cold options like a Caribbean black bean soup.

Someone else stirred the pot.

Gazpacho joins the case in summer, and the selection changes often enough that a weekly Wegmans trip rarely repeats the same bowl twice.

Grab a quart on the way out, and dinner is soup plus the bakery bread two aisles over.

9. Bakery

Dessert isn't always on one's list, but many shoppers grab Wegmans' Ultimate Chocolate Cake anyway when they walk past it.

The cake carries cocoa-soaked layers under a thick, glossy chocolate icing.

A national food outlet ranked it the bakery's second-best cake, behind only the Boston Cream Cake.

It goes fast.

No need to bake a from-scratch layer cake on a Tuesday.

A Rochester property manager once taped a note to a tenant's door demanding an extra $200 by Friday or a move-out.

That notice broke New York law the moment it went up, and most renters would never have known it.
