Lidl Came Out Cheapest of Any Grocery Chain in North Carolina. 7 Things Shoppers Should Know Before Switching

A map named Lidl the cheapest grocery chain in North Carolina.

That’s a tempting reason to change where you shop.

But here’s what we recommend checking before you move your weekly grocery trip to Lidl.

How the Map Was Built

Lidl’s North Carolina result comes from a map that Freedom Debt Relief put together, which Newsweek covered in August 2026.

Freedom Debt Relief started with Consumer Reports’ 2026 grocery price comparison.

Consumer Reports worked with the New York consultancy Strategic Resource Group to collect the prices.

That comparison ranked grocery chains against Walmart by the cost of a comparable basket of common groceries.

Freedom Debt Relief then checked which of those chains have stores in each state, and Lidl came out cheapest in eight of them.

North Carolina was one.

1. The Six Metros Priced

Lidl’s place in the Consumer Reports ranking comes from a comparison across six metro areas: Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Los Angeles and Virginia Beach.

None of the six is in North Carolina.

Virginia Beach, in neighboring Virginia, was the nearest.

Raleigh wasn’t on the list.

If you shop in Wilmington, nobody in that comparison priced your market.

A ranking built in other cities is a starting point for North Carolina shoppers, not a price check on the stores near them.

2. Lidl’s Gap Over Walmart

Lidl ranked third in the Consumer Reports comparison, with prices 8.5% lower than Walmart’s.

Costco took the top spot, 21.4% under Walmart, with BJ’s Wholesale Club in second.

Costco’s and BJ’s annual membership fees aren’t accounted for in the comparison.

Every chain was measured against Walmart, so that 8.5% isn’t a comparison with the store where you shop now.

In the same map, Aldi was named cheapest in 32 states, and Lidl in eight.

A store that already undercuts Walmart leaves Lidl a smaller edge than 8.5%.

What 8.5% Means on a $100 Cart

Lidl’s 8.5% gap works out to about $91.50 for a basket that costs $100 at Walmart.

Costco’s 21.4% gap works out to about $78.60 for that same basket.

Both figures are averages across six metro areas, so they describe a typical basket in those cities, not what any single North Carolina store charges.

3. What Counted as a Price

Consumer Reports collected its prices from store shelves, in person, in late summer 2025, within 48 hours in each metro area.

The amounts include sale prices and the discounts you get with a free store loyalty card.

Manufacturer coupons and savings available only through smartphone apps aren’t reflected.

Anyone who uses manufacturer coupons at their current store may pay less than the comparison suggests.

4. Mostly Store Brands

Lidl puts its private-label share at around 80% of its products.

Private-label products carry store-brand labels instead of the national brands you may buy today.

Consumer Reports says its baskets were smaller for stores that focus on private-label brands or specialty goods.

How much of your usual list Lidl carries under a label you’d accept decides how much of the gap shows up at your register.

Question 1 of 9

In Consumer Reports’ 2026 supermarket comparison, how big was the gap between the highest- and lowest-priced chains in each city?

5. Bags at Checkout

Lidl has always encouraged shoppers to bring a reusable bag from home.

It has never given away single-use plastic bags at checkout.

Paper bags and reusable plastic bags carry a small fee, which Lidl says helps its customers save money.

A small reusable tote costs $0.59 at stores that carry it.

The ranking's baskets held packaged goods, produce and meat, so a bag fee is an extra at checkout.

6. Lidl Plus App

Lidl Plus is a free rewards app with zero membership fees.

Member deals apply when you scan the app at checkout, or when you enter your phone number at the register.

The app also carries the weekly ad and coupons tailored to your shopping habits.

Consumer Reports left out savings available only through smartphone apps, so any app-only deals aren't reflected in Lidl's place in the ranking.

Lidl isn't a member-only club.

7. Where the Stores Are

By April 2018, WRAL counted 14 Lidl stores in North Carolina, from Havelock and Morehead City on the coast to Shelby, Lexington and Winston-Salem inland.

Stores also close: in May 2019, Lidl said its Kinston store would shut that summer.

Wilmington's first Lidl opened in December 2019, the company's 19th location in the state.

A February 2021 report called Lidl's Apex store its 10th in central North Carolina and listed none yet in Durham or Chapel Hill.

Lidl's growth came town by town, so a statewide ranking says nothing about how far the nearest store is from you.

Check Lidl's store locator for the nearest address before you plan around the switch.

Lidl's Effect on Nearby Prices

A 2018 study from the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School, commissioned by Lidl US, found rival grocers priced about 9.3% lower near Lidl stores than in markets without one.

It compared six markets with Lidl stores against six markets without any, across Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Twelve markets across three states show a pattern, not a guarantee for any one town.

Any effect on your own store's prices would depend on a Lidl opening nearby.

Aldi's prices moved the most.

Near a Lidl, Aldi's prices ran up to 19% lower, Food Lion's up to 15%, and Walmart's up to 4%.

The study priced 48 grocery products, including dairy, meats, produce, and canned and frozen goods.

Some Lowes Foods stores have a Pick & Prep station where a sous chef cuts your fruit and veggies while you shop.

That's one less job waiting at home with Thanksgiving shopping coming up.
